Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017 Dad's Army Radio Hour Pleasance Dome (Venue 23) REview Wednesday 3rd August 2017

HOMEPAGE FRINGE 2017 PAGE PAST REVIEWS 2017 PAST REVIEWS 2016

Dad’s Army, one of the great classic British television comedies, was created and written by David Croft and Jimmy Perry and screened on the BBC from 1968 to 1977.  This 50th year celebration takes us back to Walmington-on-Sea, the troubled War years, immortal characters and adapted radio scripts based on four classic television episodes.  Today’s were “My British Buddy” and “The Day The Balloon Went Up”.

I have to admit here a great fondness for this show and its characters, so this one directed by Owen Lewis, with sound design by Tom Lishman and performed  by David Benson and Jack Lane presenting rotating pairs of radio scripts was always on my list of “must see shows” at this year’s Fringe.

With great skill, David Benson and Jack Lane bring back to life all of our favourite characters from the show (even the ladies) and listening to their performance it is easy to see again the television episodes in your mind’s eye…that itself may be a problem for some people though as these characters are so identifiable that it is all too easy to imagine them on stage as they are so lovingly recreated in voice and mannerisms in this show.

Classic British comedy recreated by two classic performers.  A show not to miss.
