Lassie Will Ye Go from Elsa Jean McTaggart is the new 16 track album from this very individual Scottish singer-songwriter and fiddle player. Elsa has been immersed in the sounds of Scottish and Irish traditional music and fiddle playing pretty much all her life, and the music and songs on this album show not only a love for the traditional songs, but a willingness to take that music in a contemporary direction.
This album is a mixture of traditional songs that will be well known to many people, and new songs and music written by Elsa. The opening track “The Birks of Aberfeldy” by Robert Burns sets everyone listening on familiar ground to start with. “Ye Banks and Braes” and “Auld Lang Syne” also by Robert Burns song sits comfortably on this album with new songs by Elsa. “Coming Home” is one of these new songs that somehow manages the trick of sounding traditional while at the same time having elements of classic 1960s ballads by Dusty Springfield in there .
It’s not only the songs and vocals that blend so easily between traditional and modern here, but also some fine fiddle playing.
What of course sets the whole album off, is that clear and very traditional, yet somehow also very contemporary sounding voice of Elsa Jean McTaggart.
