Lightnin’ Malcolm at The City Arts Centre this afternoon brought to Edinburgh and everyone in the room a taste of his authentic Mississippi Blues, and it was a pleasure just to sit and listen to the music of the man and his gentle laid back stage presentation.
Music for this show (one of a few he is doing for this Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival) was a mixture of older songs and music that included an un-named instrumental to open with and new material from the new album “Foot Soldier” – including the first track from this album “Done Wrong”.
Some great back catalogue songs included “Big Rock”, the Hank Williams sounding “Giving You Away” and the slide guitar sounds of “High Water”
Lightnin’ Malcolm was playing guitar and foot pedal drums, and the combination provided that classic pounding blues rhythm that everyone just seems to appreciate.
One of the nice things about Lightnin’ Malcolm was just watching how much this man loves his music and is proud of his musical heritage and those that have gone before him – Sam Cooke, John Lee Hooker and Hank Williams to name check but a few. Nice to see there that musicians of different styles have their place and influence in his music. Also nice to hear was that he is trying as much as possible to make sure that every show at this festival has as much different material as possible in it rather than taking the easier route of playing the same standard sets each time.
This is the first time that I have met the music of Lightnin’ Malcolm, and there is a lot out there that I have to listen to now. I hope this musician makes some return visits soon to Edinburgh and this “Foot Soldier” continues his task of bringing his music to us all.
