The Three Belles In the Mood are back in town for one show only at St Andrew's and St George's West, George Street (Venue 111), bringing back with them some classic wartime songs and 1950s sounds all delivered in an “Andrews Sisters” style.
The Three Belles are Betty, Gail and Dorothy and in their matching green frocks and permanent wave hairstyles take us back through time to classic songs including “In The Mood”, “Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree (with Anyone Else But Me)”, “I’ll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time” and of course “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”...all delivered in classic vintage style and timing.
Also nice to hear a little French flavour in the set with “La Vie en Rose”, and an original song “Belles Keep Swinging” written so closely to the period style of the other songs that it fits in perfectly. Writing “period” sounding music without adding later influences is very difficult to do, and few bands manage it properly like this.
The girls are backed again this year by The Bevin Boys (complete with original 1940s drum kit), and it’s easy to see why they are one of the busiest swing bands in the country at the moment .
This is always an afternoon show, and always full. Just a great way to switch off from 21st century life to another time and place.
